DRAKENSBERG WILDERNESS

A Solo Journey Through Paradise

(Second Edition – Digital PDF)

Raw adventures. One man. A wilderness that never gives you quite what you expect.

There are places you visit.

And then there are places that get under your skin.

For me, the Drakensberg became the latter.

Over many years of walking, climbing, exploring and sometimes getting myself into situations where perhaps a little more common sense would have been useful, I came to know this extraordinary wilderness in a way that no guidebook could ever describe.

This is not a book about ticking off famous destinations.

It is the story of going out there alone and finding out what happens.

COME WALK THE BERG WITH ME

Imagine setting off into the mountains with no tour group, no crowds and nobody telling you what is around the next corner.

Just your boots, your backpack, the weather, the mountains...

…and whatever the Drakensberg decides to throw at you.

There are moments of extraordinary beauty.

There are moments of solitude so complete that the rest of the world seems to disappear.

And then there are the moments when you suddenly realise that perhaps your carefully laid plans have gone completely to hell.

Those are the moments that make the best stories.

From remote valleys and waterfalls to high mountain passes, ancient rock formations, unexpected encounters and places where very few people ever venture, these pages take you into the wilderness as I experienced it.

Not from a comfortable chair.

From the mountain itself.

THIS IS NOT A GUIDEBOOK

You won't find a sterile list of distances, coordinates and instructions telling you exactly where to put your feet.

You'll find something far more personal.

The adventures behind the places.

The uncertainty.

The discoveries.

The mistakes.

The unexpected encounters.

The humour.

The occasional stupidity.

The sheer magnificence of being completely alone in one of the most beautiful wilderness areas on Earth.

And throughout it all, the Drakensberg itself remains the main character.

STORIES FROM A WILDERNESS THAT NEVER STOPS SURPRISING

Each chapter takes you somewhere different.

Some journeys are peaceful.

Some are physically demanding.

Some are downright unpredictable.

And some leave you wondering how the hell you managed to get yourself into that situation in the first place.

But every one of them has something in common:

I was there.

These aren't stories assembled from maps or borrowed from other hikers.

They come from years of personal exploration and a fascination with the mountains that simply refused to go away.

WHY READ IT?

Because you don't just want to see the Drakensberg.

You want to experience it.

You want to know what it feels like to stand alone beneath those enormous cliffs.

To walk into a valley where there may be nobody else for miles.

To hear nothing but wind and water.

To discover something unexpected.

To wonder whether the weather is about to turn.

To keep walking anyway.

And perhaps, for a few hours, to leave the modern world far behind.

This book is an invitation to do exactly that.

STEP INTO THE WILDERNESS

The mountains are waiting.

The stories are written.

All that's missing is you.

Take the first step.

You never know where the trail is going to lead.

Featured Chapters / Sneak Peek Section

Step off the edge of the known world and into the raw, untamed heart of the Drakensberg.

In these pages, the noise of modern life fades away, replaced by the deafening silence of high-altitude plateaus, the haunting grace of ancient San rock art hidden in forgotten caves, and the unpredictable fury of mountain thunderstorms. Whether you are facing down a sudden lightning strike near Grindstone Caves, sharing a quiet midnight moment with a curious eland, or discovering hidden paradises in Lotheni and Kamberg, this is more than a journey through the wilderness—it is a journey back to yourself.

Are you ready to walk the silent paths?

·        Chapter 3: Lotheni – Place of my heart — Discovering "Jurassic Park" and "Paradise Valley," sliding down mountain slopes in search of a lost hat, and finding ancient San rock art.

·        Chapter 5: Injisuthi – Place of the 'Well fed Dog' — The pivotal expedition that turned day-walking into a full wilderness immersion, featuring a harrowing encounter with a high-altitude thunderstorm near Grindstone Caves.

·        Chapter 4: Eland of the Drakensberg – King of the Mountains — A shift in perspective exploring quiet eland herds, a midnight biscuit thief, and the poignant history of early colonial hunters and vanishing Bushmen.

·        Chapter 13: Kamberg – The hidden Paradise — Capturing the profound solitude and hidden valleys where an urban life gives way to absolute peace in sanctuary.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

I first began keeping notes about my Drakensberg adventures many years ago.

What started as a record of my journeys became something much bigger: a collection of memories, discoveries and experiences from a wilderness that has given me far more than I could ever put into words.

This second edited edition brings those original stories together again.

And the adventures haven't stopped.

There are still many more tales waiting to be told.

Writing this book brought back many memories, all of them special. I would love to have all of those moments and discoveries all over again. I have become a wild man at heart, at peace in the wilderness. The Drakensberg Wilderness holds no fear for me; it is my sanctuary... a place where I do not have to pretend. I belong there, part of a life far removed from civilian life..."

I like the taste of freedom, the smell of danger. Sometimes the smell of fear……….
